Animal Shelters Near Me That Take Birds

Animal Shelters Near Me That Take Birds

If you would like to adopt a companion bird, Free Flight is here to help. We carefully evaluate each bird and prospective adoptive family to ensure mutual bonding and suitability.

Sponsoring a parrot can be very rewarding for those of us who are not in a position to have a parrot in their home.

Mickaboo

Consider adoption - due to the longevity of most species of parrots, it’s inevitable that at some point many parrots will be in need of a new home. Why not make it yours! Free Flight’s experienced staff can help you find the right companion to ensure bonding with you and your family.

Andersonville Is Home To Chicago's Only Licensed Exotic Animal Rescue: 'we're All Animal Lovers Here'

Our adoption placement success is directly related to our philosophy of requiring multiple visits to the sanctuary for bonding and learning, as well as our careful evaluation and screening of prospective adopters.

For the best interests of our flock, we reserve the right to deny any potential applicant. We do not ship, breed, or sell birds. We will not adopt a bird to anyone who intends to breed the bird. We do not adopt to minors (anyone under 18).

It takes an average of $583 a year to support one young, healthy bird who may be with us for upwards of two years, or even with us in lifelong residency if she/he requires it. Cost of living increases substantially for special needs and geriatric parrots - who now make up most of Free Flight’s flock.

Explosion Of Parakeets Overwhelms Michigan Animal Shelter

Do you have a favorite bird that you visit at Free Flight or online that you would like to sponsor? Or maybe you simply want to help Free Flight fulfill our mission? Whatever the reason may be, your support is invaluable to help us care for our birds.

Both the happiest and saddest days at Free Flight are when one of our flock leaves to start life in their new home. We are sad to see them go but so thrilled that they have a new loving home.

Cosmo came into Free Flight when his previous owners decided they could not handle the combined work load of having a newborn baby and a parrot. He settled in with our flock and became re-socialzed quickly. He was eager to be handled and given attention, which made him one of our visitors' favorite birds. A sweet couple came in wanting to adopt an African Grey parrot because of their high level of intelligence and the wife had had one growing up. They met Cosmo and continued to visit him every Saturday for over 3 months to ensure that Cosmo liked them as much as they liked him. After we felt like the bond was evident between them, they made the next step and welcomed him into their family. To their delight, Cosmo continues to surprise them with new and amusing verbalizations frequently.

Us Animal Shelter Shocked After 800 Parakeets Handed Over

Moe and Pepper joined the Free Flight flock together. Moe was a very friendly male Solomon Island Eclectus, and Pepper was a less friendly female Solomon Island Eclectus. We promised the prior owners that we would adopt them out together- and we waited until that special person would come around looking for two birds. Several years later, a very friendly couple came in looking to adopt a bird into their family. They had a large outdoor cage in their covered courtyard, and could easily accommodate two birds. After multiple visits they fell in love with Moe and Pepper and life has been wonderful for all ever since!

Sweet Zeke, a White Bellied Caique, came into Free Flight fearful and untrusting of people. It took many months living here to begin to trust humans again.Slowly through our gentle socialization process, he became more comfortable being handled. Zeke lived in the sanctuary for over a year before we had a kind couple come in looking to give a home to a smaller bird. They decided that Zeke was the one! They continued to visit to ensure that he trusted both the husband and the wife. Once we felt that the timing was right and their bond was formed, they took Zeke home.

Ernie is a beautiful little Yellow Naped Amazon whose beloved owner passed away and left her without a home. She became a loved addition to our flock, and in spite of her clumsy perching ability, enjoyed handling by many people. A friend of Free Flight who had adopted a macaw from us previously fell for her sweet nature and adopted her into his family. Ernie especially likes his grandmother!6/24/2023:  is hosting monthly online adoption fairs via Zoom and Facebook. Our next adoption fair will be shown via Zoom on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at 1 pm PT.  Register here.

Is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization (tax id #94-3286344) based in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. is an all-volunteer virtual organization, meaning we are a network of volunteers with no central physical location. Our basic goal is to rescue parrots and other commonly domesticated companion birds who have been neglected, abused, injured or surrendered to us because their owners can no longer care for them. To accomplish this goal, we do the following:

Is always looking for energetic, responsible volunteers to become foster parents and to help us rescue 300 to 400 birds every year,  including helping with administration, education, fostering, public relations, technical support, and even simple one-day tasks such as bird and cage transport or staffing our adoption fairs.Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue, based in Northern California, helps birds commonly kept as indoor pets by rescuing, rehabilitating (physically and behaviorally), and re-homing them. Most of these rescued birds come to us injured, abused, or neglected, or are very ill. We usually care for about 500 birds at a time, incurring veterinary bills averaging $50, 000 monthly. This project helps pay for those medical expenses.

Many pets are given up because their owners are no longer able to care for them, financially or behaviorally. We rescue birds that are surrendered to us, that shelters turn away, that are found in empty apartments and foreclosed homes and even dumpsters, or that were released into the wild completely unable to survive on their own. Most animal shelters are designed to house cats and dogs, and are unable to accept or care for the needs of domesticated birds like parrots, thus needing to surrender

Those who surrender their birds to us are assured their former pet birds will receive the care and human interaction these intelligent, social creatures deserve. We have no central facility; we place these birds in foster homes until a suitable adoptive parent can be found. We are an all-volunteer organization, so virtually all (over 95%) of the money we raise goes toward veterinary costs and medical expenses, with the remainder for education and outreach.

Birds

Our goal is to medically rehabilitate each of our 450+ birds sufficiently so that they may be placed in qualified permanent homes. Over time, we believe our education and outreach efforts will reduce the number of birds surrendered to us for various reasons.
