So I was randomly poking around and I remembered that there was a Dragon Quest anime. As far as I can tell, while it tries to imitate Toriyama's style it's mostly original stuff that's been made up for the anime.
Then I learned that there was also a Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibouken anime, but that was originally a popular Shonen Jump anime so that's not unusual.
But I'm gradually remembering that there were a million of these and I haven't watched a whole lot of them. How about Salamander, the spinoff of Gradius? Logically, I had kind of assumed that there must have been pilots behind the cockpits of Vic Viper and Lord British, but it's weird to see a bunch of anime people front and center in an anime about a space shmup.
Must See Anime Like
It might be a little later than the rest of these, but probably the most obscure one I'll list which I've actually seen is short set of episodes based on the original Mega Man. It looked pretty good but it was one of those video game characters come to the real world and team up with some kids stories.
Then the next few things coming to mind are Power Stone, Monster Rancher, Medabots, Pokemon and the like, but now we're getting recent enough that I actually saw those things on TV. Plus I'm thinking of fighting game OVAs but there are a ton of those, down to friggin' Gowcaizer, so I don't even want to go into that. Half of them have designs by Masami Obari too.
So that's all I can think of from the top of my head. I guarantee you I'm forgetting a dozen really obvious ones. Do you know of any of these? Do you know others I haven't listened? Have you watched any of them? Would you recommend some? If these are new to you, are there any you're curious about?

It's an adaptation of the original book. I believe the old NES games were sequels to that story (and match the art-style of the anime). Shin MegaTen came later, on the SNES, I think.

I recently rewatched Dragon Quest anime in Japanese. Music is too good. but man Dai is too OP. I will read the manga soon enough.

I don't wanna be that guy, but I gotta point out that's not the Street Fighter anime, but the American cartoon that took some inspiration from the Van Damme movie. However, there is Street Fighter II V, which I remember watching on like, Starz or something, right after reruns of Now and Then, Here and There.
Video Games That Should've Been Made Into Anime
I still have my VHS copy of the Fire Emblem anime. English dubbed at that! Nothing like going back and hearing all of these characters go by names that Nintendo never used when they finally got around to localizing the games. (Prince Mars, Ellis, Sheeda, etc.)
There was that period when seemingly every fighting game got an OVA. Watched the shit out of the 3rd Fatal Fury OVA.

To be fair, Toriyama did design the main cast.
Ps3, Vita Games Mysteriously Expiring, Making Them Unplayable
I mostly remember the Twinbee OVA because someone used the opening music in some Newgrounds flash game and I thought it was super catchy.

Samurai Showdown with Nakaruru, SF2 with Chun-Li, Fatal Fury with Mai Shiranui, Anna Williams in Tekken The Motion Picture, someone from Voltage Fighter Gowcaiser, and someone from Battle Arena Toshinden

Jumplight Odyssey Is A Huge Tribute To Anime Like Macross
I owned every VHS tape of that series. While at times it had some odd looking animation or designs (especially when you compare it to the preceding animated film), it was way better than whatever the fuck the puke that was the more well known US TV adaptation. It's been so long since I've watched them though that I forgot how good that intro music was.
L Thammy said: Could be, but I'm assuming none of you nerds read books so it's okay. Click to expand... Click to shrink... Weirdly hostile. That user is correct. The games are based on the original light novels, as are the OVAs. I read them years ago. They're pulpy and kinda gross. So basically what you'd expect. The Shin was added with the soft reboot on Super Famicom from which the rest of the series was derived.
I've played Dragon Power, the Dragon Ball game on the NES that got changed. I remember how when I finally did see Dragon Ball the anime I was like Hey this is like that NES game. Years later found out it was that NES game and how it got altered.
Amazing Anime Games That We All Forgot About
I was also really impressed when the 2nd opening music was featured in Project Zone 2. Are there other examples of game anime adaptions being reference in game themselves?
I once got so hyped seeing there was a Final Fantasy anime, I mean, holy shit, Final Fantasy as an anime?! Sign me up.
While this isn't specifically based off of a video game (that I know of), basically everyone that watched this with me around the time of the US release could not stop comparing it to Samurai Shodown.

Samurai Shodown takes most of its characters from either historical sources or characters from the Ninja Scroll anime. In fact, a few designers that worked on Samurai Shodown also worked on the Ninja Scroll anime... Click to expand... Click to shrink...

They Really Really Really Should Make An Rpg Or A Brand New Anime With Lores From The Cards
There was an OVA under development for Joy Mecha Fight, but J.C.Staff Co. went over budget on the scene where Sukapon's robot breasts jiggle too much during combat and they accidentally poke themselves in the eye with their nipples.
I remember the Virtua Fighter anime, in Latam they renamed it The virtuous fighter, and every character had their name changed for something more American. Akira was thus renamed Alex.

Games With Amazing Anime Aesthetic
This is an OAV of the anime based on the first Megami Tensei novel, and it's hot garbage like the original novel itself.
An OAV for Shin Megami Tensei
