Well, even if you have not watched any anime, you may have noticed that there are recurring character archetypes. Take James Bond for instance, he is the womanizing spy archetype. Angelina Jolie is another example; she often plays strong independent female leads. In anime these tropes are better defined and more prominent. I’ll start off with the most common ones.
Tsundere: A portmanteau of the Japanese words for disgust (tsun) and the lovey-dovey (dere). Tsunderes are initially disgusted and hostile towards their love interest but slowly start to show more affection. They obviously have feelings towards their love interest but are too embarrassed to show it. A common phrase said by Tsunderes is ” It’s not like I like you are anything!”
Kuudere: A subtype of Tsundere, Kuuderes are initially cool and aloof towards their love interest. Instead of feigned disgust generated by embarrassment, they appear uninterested.

Yandere: The craziest of the deres, the motto of the Yandere is “If I can’t have you, nobody can!” Yanderes love their love interest to the point of extreme devotion and if they canb’t love them back, then in the eyes of a Yandere, they are better off dead.
Osananajimi: The childhood friend character. The main character usually grows up with someone of the opposite sex whom they view as a sister/brother. Eventually, one of the two develops feelings for the others but this is usually doomed to fail.
Japanese for “beautiful boy”, this trope describes men who are not really handsome, but are better described as beautiful. They usually have longer than average hair and are more feminine in appearance and manner.

Moe: This term is a hard one to describe. Moe in general refers to being “cute”. But it is more specific than that. A more accurate definition would be that Moe is a standard type of cute that conforms to a set of guidelines. One such guideline could be having big eyes.
While you might be completely weirded out by these terms, which is a totally logical response, these anime tropes aren’t all that strange if you really think about it. They are exaggerations of real life human characteristics, but just really exaggerated.
