Anime Movie This 2019
This year anime movies had a more limited release cadence but there were certainly still standouts among them. In 2019 we got movies for two shonen giants and a great movie debut from a popular anime studio.
Best Anime Movie of 2019: PromarePromare is a great debut film out of Studio Trigger. Its characters burn bright with stylish dess and fun personalities, but the action is the real scene-stealer. Time split between protagonists Galo and Lio’s conflicts in a world on fire is done well, though the movie would have been stronger with tighter editing to flesh out some finer character details.
Promare is littered with Trigger references too, so much so that even the movie’s structure is reminiscent of the director and writer’s past work. That’s hardly a problem, though, as that just means Promare keeps escalating to bigger and more exciting fight sequences.
Blackfox (2019 Film)
Dragon Ball Super: BrolyDragon Ball Super: Broly delivers in terms of awesome action, but more than that, it uses the fathers of Goku, Vegeta, and Broly to link back to the late-1980s and early-1990s heyday of the series to add a relatable and thoughtful subtext. It’s a humorous movie that bounds into the world of imagination and is gripping to the end.
One Piece: StampedeOne Piece Stampede pulls out all the stops on this epic side story with Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates. Everybody, and I mean practically everybody, shows up to the grand Pirate Festival where the unlikeliest of characters clash together.
One Piece Stampede is a great movie for long-time fans of the series, with humor and intense action keeping you entertained all the way through.
