Hunter X Hunter Anime Description

Yoshihiro Togashi’s debilitating health issues, however, have stalled the progression of the story. The manga, already known for its hiatuses, went without an update for nearly four years.

Then, on May 24, an unchanged Twitter handle that looked like a bot posted page number six of what looked to be a draft of Hunter x Hunter. After the One Punch Man artist confirmed the legitimacy of the account, Togahi’s Twitter gained more than one million followers in a day.

My

There’s a reason why people continue to hold out hope for Yoshihiro Togashi to eventually return and put the bow on the beloved series. And even if you’ve never experienced a single bit of Hunter x Hunter, now is as good a time as any to jump in.

Hunter X Hunter: Every Main Character's Age, Height, And Birthday

HxH might start off as a stock-standard shonen protagonist story: Gon Freecs, a curious 11-year-old boy, aspires to be a titular Hunter. As we follow Gon along for the ride, however, the journey is an inhumanly exhilarating roller coaster, with more twists hiding behind every turn.

Every place is fantastical, filled with expansive cities and exotic locales. Every person has their own goals, moving around the world to put them into effect. Everything that happens is interconnected in a way so organically woven, that the world feels at once alive and inextricably linked to the characters we follow.

While Gon is ostensibly the main character, the story is never shy about putting him on the sidelines, or when we need more context on the world’s happenings. Or simply because the other characters can be so fun to follow.

Hunter X Hunter: Why Dark Continent Expedition Arc Will Revolutionize Anime

We are tourists in the best way — unable to interfere, but able to show appreciation for anything that comes our way.

At first glance, several of Hunter x Hunter’s characters look like they could be from Saturday morning cartoons. Wide-eyed, innocent protagonists, facing off against a litany of ditzy villains with more colors on them than a Twister mat.

All of them are so distinctive that a silhouette is enough for the average viewer to identify a character. Nearly every character looks like a caricature, but dig just a little deeper, and the complexities fall over to reveal themselves.

Why Now Is The Best Time To Start Watching Hunter X Hunter

Even the simplest of goals (I want to be a Hunter!) hide motivations that border on tragedy. Every person lives their own myriad web of relationships, expertly woven to meet or clash with each other when the stakes are at their highest.

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. It’s a fundamental law of physics often ignored in anime, because the rule of cool is always in effect.

The Hunter x Hunter universe manages to keep itself relatively bounded to its own reality through one of fiction’s most established power systems: Nen.

Hunter × Hunter (anime)

Nen’s rules tie each power to a linked hexagon. Six different power systems exist within it, which determine the type of effect a character’s unique powers can have or don’t have. There’s even a mathematical formula to calculate a person’s power level, a perfect gift for those obsessed with the question of “who would win?”

Knowing the boundaries and limitations of each character makes fights interesting. Watching two gods punch it out is the same thing as watching two peons slap fight, and flashy effects can only do so much to cover that up.

And that doesn’t mean the powers are any less spectacular: they just tend to come with so many drawbacks and costs that they aren’t worth it, except in the most dire of circumstances. What matters is knowing when people choose to go all out — and the inevitable consequences that follow.

Hunter × Hunter (2011 Tv Series)

Yoshihiro Togashi’s magnum opus has been on hiatus for so long, that even slow readers that consistently forget when chapters release (i.e. me) are caught up. Even now, with the hype train on Hunter x Hunter going full steam ahead, there’s probably time for you to jump on, catch up to the station, and board the same carriage.

One of the best parts of following an ongoing series is the healthy discussion that ensues between each break. One example is JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures. For each season that comes out, anime-onlies can react to a fresh episode and discuss theories, while manga readers can check out the speculation, whether funny, accurate, or just tremendous.

Whether you choose to watch the masterpiece anime, or jump onto the manga train with brakes aplenty, Hunter x Hunter is worth it.

The show is available on Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video.

Was recommended to me separately by several people, I decided that I’d give it a shot. With 148 episodes available on Netflix, I knew that there was a good chance I’d lose interest and the show would join the graveyard of unfinished shows in my “Continue Watching” section. Instead, I absolutely fell in love.

Why

The show centers around Gon Freecss, a 12-year-old boy who goes on an adventure to become a Hunter in hopes of finding his father. The Hunters Association holds an annual exam to determine if applicants are worthy of a Hunter’s license which is for elite humans with extraordinary abilities. This license allows its holder to go almost anywhere and do almost anything. Throughout the hunter’s exam, Gon meets many other characters – some with better motivations than others.

The characters in this show are incredibly developed. Maybe I’m just a softy, but I got emotionally attached to Gon and his friends after just a few episodes. Gon is friendly, intensely loyal, and always looking to do the right thing- even when in a situation that seemingly won’t allow it. His naivety is endearing, although at times frustrating for other characters.

Gon meets Leorio Paradinight and Kurapika in the first episode. Leorio presents himself as self-centered and materialistic. But, as the show continues, he proves himself to be loyal and sensitive. Kurapika is introverted, stoic, and level-headed, although his righteous rage sometimes takes over. In episode 4, Gon meets Killua Zoldyck. Killua is also 12 years old but is hardened by his traumatic childhood and his family of famous assassins. Through his friendships, Killua shows his loyalty and clear desire to deviate from the path that his family wants for him.

The audience gets a look at all of the characters’ internal monologues throughout the show, including the antagonists. This, in addition to the occasional backstory, helps to create amazing character development that’s hard to beat. In real time, the audience understands why these characters are the way they are.

There May Be More Hunter X Hunter On The Way

Can get a bit dark. Antagonists can be brutal and vicious, torturing and mutilating their opponents. The protagonists are often faced with problems that have no good solution. Death is a reoccurring character. Without spoilers, all I can say is dark animated shows aren’t for everyone.

Although my anime experience is restricted to Studio Ghibli films and Pokémon, I know that many adamant anime lovers will tell you that it’s best to watch anime in Japanese. However, I chose to watch it in English with English subtitles. With a show as complex as this one, I wanted to make it easier to follow along. The subtitles can be extremely helpful for character names and words that are specific to the “Hunter x Hunter” universe.

How

The only downside of the show is that there’s not more of it. The last episode came out in 2014 and the manga that the animated series is based on is still unfinished. Its creator, Yoshihiro Togashi, is taking a hiatus due to health concerns.

The Gender Complexities Within Hunter X Hunter

Storylines are detailed and captivating with incredible fight scenes. The characters are interesting and well-developed. The protagonists are lovable. The visuals are stunning. And it’s all packaged in bite-sized, roughly 20-minute episodes, perfect for when you don’t want to commit to watching an hour of TV. But beware, they’re addicting.Hunters are a special breed, dedicated to tracking down treasures, magical beasts and even other people. But such pursuits require a license, and less than one in a hundred thousand can pass the grueling qualification exam. Those who do pass gain access to restricted areas, amazing stores of information and the right to call themselves “Hunters.” Can Gon, a country boy, follow his father and join their ranks?

Yoshihiro Togashi’s manga career began in 1986 at the age of twenty, when he won the coveted Osamu Tezuka Award for new manga artists. He debuted in the Japanese Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1989 with the romantic comedy Tende Showaru Cupid. From 1990 to 1994, he wrote and drew the hit manga YuYu Hakusho, which was followed by the dark-comedy science fiction series Level E and the adventure series Hunter x Hunter. In 1999, he married the manga artist Naoko Takeuchi.
