Animal Crossing Switch Tree Stump
Since releasing on March 20th, millions of Animal Crossing: New Horizons players around the world have been hard at work on building their dream island, collecting resources and felling trees in the hopes of acquiring a pink flamingo. Unfortunately for the aesthetic-orientated among us, chopping down trees leaves behind some rather unsightly tree stumps.
While you can sit on these tree stumps (and even stave off the inevitable wasp assault by doing so), you might want to remove them to free up some space or to just make your island look tidier. It’s a rather simple process to do so, though the game never really tells you how.
All you need to do to remove tree stumps in New Horizons is to get yourself a shovel. Even a flimsy shovel, which costs just 5 hardwood to make, will be up to the job. If you don’t want to craft the shovel, Timmy will sell them at Resident Services and later in Nook’s Cranny.

Once you have your shovel, wander up to a stump, press A, and then it will be dug out of the ground. Press A again to fill in the hole, or use this opportunity to plant some new fruit trees.
And that’s all there really is to it. You can also use your shovel to dig up and relocate flowers, something which I revelled in as I made symmetrical flower beds that no one will probably ever see or appreciate.

They first appear in Animal Forest. They do not occur naturally, but appear when a player has cut down a tree using an axe.
To create a stump, the player must first obtain an axe. A regular axe can be bought from Tom Nook's store or a Nookling store for 400 Bells. In New Leaf, the regular axe can be purchased from Leif's Gardening Store. In New Horizons, the player can obtain an axe through DIY or otherwise. Once obtained, the player must equip the axe and stand facing the tree when using the action button to swing the axe. After three swings, the tree will split revealing a tree stump.
In New Horizons, no stump will appear if the player uses a shovel on a tree while having at least one stamina.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons: Beetles
In Wild World, tree stumps had very few uses other than for decorative purposes. It wasn't until later games that they developed a purpose.
In City Folk, stumps became the only way of finding and catching Violin and Longhorn Beetles, which can be found sitting on top of tree stumps. Previous to City Folk, they could only be found on tree trunks with other beetles.
In New Leaf, tree stumps were changed further. With the new ability of adding town features such as benches, tree stumps gained the ability of being used as seating. Villagers can sometimes be spotted sitting on tree stumps.

In addition, players also gained the ability of being able to find Special Stump Patterns when they have cut down a tree using an axe. The chances of finding stump patterns are increased when using a golden axe but guaranteed with a silver axe. In total, there are 12 patterns - 6 from cedar trees and 6 from fruit and non-fruit bearing trees.
If a villager moves in near a stump, it will disappear. This also happens when choosing a spot for a Public Works Project, as stated by Isabelle.
In New Horizons, the special stump patterns from New Leaf were removed. In addition to the Citrus long-horned beetle and Violin beetle, the Jewel beetle can now be found on tree stumps, and a new bug, Rosalia batesi beetle, was also added.
All Tree Stump Variations
Tree stumps can be removed by using a shovel when standing next to and aiming at the stump using the action button. The player will push the shovel underneath the stump and pull upwards, throwing the stump to one side where it will disappear. A hole will be left, which can be filled in with the shovel or by placing an item in place, such as a sapling.

Check out if trees respawn if you cut them, how to gather efficiently, tips and more!!!
Unlike rocks that respawn every day, trees do not grow back after they are cut. The stump it leaves will remain a stump and will not grow back even with time.
Special Stump Patterns
Don't worry about taking the Fruits from trees because they will respawn in a few days. The only way a tree would stop producing fruits is if it is cut down.
To bring back trees on your island, you'll need to plant them yourself. Seedlings can be bought from Nook's Cranny for a few hundred bells that you can then plant wherever on the island.
Striking a tree with an Axe three times will result in it being cut down. Use a Flimsy Axe or a Stone Axe to hit trees to gather materials without chopping down the tree.
How To Chop Down Trees In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
If you happen to remove a tree because of some construction, make sure to plant a seedling to replace it on the island. Wait for a few days for it to regrow enough to get materials from it.
Every day, trees can be hit thrice to get wood. Make it a habit to hit trees that you pass on your island with your axe to gather materials.
Materials will not drop from hitting trees if there are other items lying on the ground next to it! Make sure to clear the sides first before striking the tree.

There's a chance that a Wasp nest may fall down when you strike a tree. Since you can't easily shift to your Net to catch the wasp, it's better to bring medicine to cure yourself if ever you get stung.
