Farm Animal Hot Tub Cake Recipe

Farm Animal Hot Tub Cake Recipe

Tada!! Here’s an outlandishly cool Kit-kat pigs in mud cake — swimming in a tub of chocolate mud! Oh, my, what a great birthday cake! All that chocolate!!! I am breaking all ‘let’s eat healthy and lose weight’- rules and am posting the recipe for this delicious cake!

I guess, in the continued celebration of my Dutch heritage**, here is another Dutch bit of splendour! In putting this post together, I personally translated several different Dutch* recipes, and completed it with conversions of gram to oz, F to C, etc.

Pigs

** Truth: This basic cake is actually not exclusively Dutch. The Italians love this cake and eat it all the time, but they call this type of cake ‘Pan di Spagna’ (Spanish bread). See how international this recipe is.

A note on Cake Flour Cake flour is an American flour, It’s a finely milled flour with very low protein (usually 8-10% protein levels) and is typically used for cakes. Cake flour is also bleached. This causes the flour molecules to repel liquid, bind fats more efficiently and stabilize the gas bubbles produced by the raising agents. Theses factors helps a cake to rises more and to have a fluffy, tender texture. This is particularly true for cakes that have a high proportion of sugar in the recipe. Regular cake flour has no raising agents (i.e. not self-raising), although there are some brands that have created “self-raising” cake flour. So, short and sweet: you can just use plain flour instead of cake flour in Australia, because bleached flour is banned in Australia and Europe (because bleaching is not healthy). Or, if you want to go the extra mile: I have heard that you can reduce the protein content of your regular flour by taking 2 tablespoons of flour out of each cup of plain flour and replacing them with 2 tablespoons of cornflour.

Tip: if you are lucky enough to live in the Netherlands, you could order a cake by Fiona. On her Facebook page you can see lots of original birthday cakes and cakes for special events. All beautifully executed. Many are whimsical, although dare I say, this pigs in mud Kit kat chocolate cake is the true winner! Which kid / adult would not be happy getting this Kit kat pig cake for his/her birthday??!

If this pigs-in-mud kit kat cake decoration still looks like too much of a challenge, do not despair. Here is a much simpler version of a kit kat cake: an M&M kit kat cake! My new friend in London who just made this great birthday kit kat cake told me it took her just 30 minutes to put this one together (after she made the basic cake, of course). Yes, she is really gifted, but even if it took you 45 minutes to an hour to decorate the cake, it would still be worth it.This is the most chocolatey cake with the cutest little piggies!Find out how to make this simple and adorable pigs in a mud bath cake!

My 4 year old son @DashBakesTheGreats is sharing one of his favorite Pinterest-inspired cakes. We decided to make a version as easy as possible so your children can enjoy and bake along!

Although we usually like to make most recipes easy, especially when the kids are in the kitchen doing most of the work, you could easily use your favorite made from scratch chocolate cake recipe. If you have a favorite chocolate frosting or buttercream recipe as well, might as well make that too. If you’ve decided to make everything homemade, you’re going to want to probably make your own pudding as well!

There’s no substitution for the Kit Kat Bars in our opinion, but there are some new flavors of Kit Kats you might want to try, Strawberry and Dark Chocolate, Mint and Dark Chocolate, Mocha + Chocolate, or White Chocolate.

If you want to be extra creative and you’re talented with fondant, instead of the plastic piggy figurines, you could make the little piggies out of fondant.

If using a cake mix, prepare as instructed on the box into two 9″ or 8″ layer cakes. We used a boxed chocolate cake mix for this recipe, but we’ve also used our favorite one bowl chocolate cake recipe in the past and it’s delicious. Bake according to instructions and let cool.

To keep this recipe quick and simple we also used store-bought chocolate frosting. Once the cake is cooled, spread chocolate frosting on top of cake and sides (so the Kit Kat bars stay in place and have something to “stick” to).

Wash the piggy figurines beforehand and make sure they’ve dried before arranging on top of the cake. Mud bath time!! Place your piggies lightly onto and into the pudding.

Place a ribbon around the center of the Kit Kats and tie a bow. It’s a cute addition and it will help hold the Kit Kat bars in place. Wash and dry your ribbon if you are worried about it touching the Kit Kats.

6. Over a pan of boiling water, place a bowl with the chocolate, butter and milk. Once melted, mix in the 150g sieved icing sugar to form a smooth paste.

7. Using the chocolate mixture, sandwich the cakes together, then spread the rest around the sides and a thin layer for the top.

8. Break the chocolate wafers into singular strips and place around the edge of the cake. Tie with a piece of string so that it holds the cake together until set. Put in fridge.

9. Once cool, you can make the chocolate ganache. Melt the dark chocolate and butter together and add the hot cream, making sure it is more of a liquid mixture.

10. Once it has cooled a little, pour on top of the cake to make it look like mud. Pop straight back into the fridge.

Take 20g pink icing and roll into a ball for the pigs head. Take 30g for its tummy and roll into another flatter ball. Make 4 pea sized balls for the trotters. Make a small oval shape for the snout and 2 small triangle pieces for the ears. Using a tooth pick or decorating utensils, make the indentations. Attach the ears, headand snout with edible glue.

I can’t take any credit for the design of this one – it’s totally copied from one of the many versions doing the rounds on the internet. I used to be creative…I even went to art college and went to Uni to study graphic design! Unfortunately I had run out of ideas by Christmas in my first year so I gave up on that career. I’m now much happier being able to search
