To draw anime hair, start by sketching the shape of your character’s head. Sketch a line where you want their hairline to be, usually about halfway between the brow line and the top of the head. Next, pencil in the character’s hair using simple lines and curves. In general, the hair should follow the natural curves of the head, but don’t be afraid to give your character spiky hair that sticks up or the occasional ahoge (cowlick of flyaway hair) to make their hairstyle more interesting. Don’t worry about drawing every individual strand—just add a few lines or spikes here and there to suggest the shape of the locks and the texture of the hair. Experiment with giving your character bangs that hang over their eyes or hair that’s brushed back away from their forehead, depending on the look you’re going for. You can also try giving your character a ponytail or braids if you like. When you’re done, erase the hairline, the outlines of the character’s head shape, and any other parts of the head and face that are covered by the hair. If you want, color the hair in and add some highlights. One of the most iconic features of manga and anime is by far the character’s hair. Typically not drawn as individual strands, manga hair is usually composed of large segments or “chunks”. While this is ultimately easier and less time consuming, you can run into some trouble if you don’t know the basics.

Assuming you have a pretty good grasp on other manga character features by now, you’re going to want to start by lightly drawing a head.

Simple – your character will start out bald. This is why you’re using very light pressure; when it’s time to add the hair, you can remove any unnecessary lines that show the scalp.
Once you have your head drawn and looking the way you like, you can get started with whatever hairstyle you decide on.
To make things a little easier, lets start with a short, male’s hairstyle. These can also be fairly complex depending on the route you want to take, but we’ll go with something fairly standard for now.

Start by lightly sketching the rough shape of the hair. The point of this is to help you work out things like placement, where any parts will lie, and how big the hair should be.
It’s perfectly fine if this doesn’t look good yet. You’re not going for quality or detail at this point – just a guide to follow.
For spikey hair, you’re obviously going to want each strand to go upwards. But remember - with manga and anime you don’t actually draw each hair individually. You’ll want to clump them together in larger, thicker segments.

Within these clumps, add a few additional lines representing strands and areas where the hair naturally parts or falls. Once things look begin looking how you like, go over what you’ve just drawn with fine, darker lines and erase any other marks that don’t belong. After some shading and color, your hair should look complete.
Start out by lightly drawing your character’s head in the size and position you like. Now, imagine a hairstyle you like and how it would lay on a human head. For this tutorial, let’s draw fairly long hair with bangs pushed to one side.
Lightly sketch out the rough shape of the hair, paying close attention to where parts should be and how the hair will fall. Since this is a longer hairdo, strands (large segments) of hair will flow downward – thanks gravity!
How To Draw Male Short Hair, Hairstyles
Since this style will have bangs, it’s a good idea to lightly draw the hairline so you can see where the forehead and ends and the hair begins. This just makes things a bit easier when trying to figure out the way bangs should rest against the head.
Like before, when the basic layout of the hair looks good, go back and add darker, smooth lines where the final product will be and add various details and shading throughout. When everything looks the way you like, erase the earlier sketch lines that don’t belong.
There are countless variations you can use when drawing anime and manga hair, but the basic premise remains the same. No matter the style you use, it’s good to keep the following in mind:

To help avoid mistakes this tutorial uses a “see through” drawing approach. This means that if you are going to be following along using pencil and paper it’s important that you first make light lines that you can easily erase. You will need to do so with parts of the drawing before you finish. You can darken the strokes after you complete the line drawing.
While this “hairstyle” is hardly any hair it’s a good one to start with as it shows the hairline. This will be important to drawing the other styles.
The front off the “buzz cut” will be part of the hairline. Draw it with with just two large curves that create a bottom pointing tip slightly below the top of the head.

Please note that this is just a basic example as to how to draw the hairline. It can vary in shape and position in both real people and anime characters.
Add the sides of the hairline with another pair of curves that join with the first set a good distance above the ears.
Finally draw the top/back part of the “buzz cut” hair. Depending on how short you want this to be you can even leave this step out. If the hair is almost completely shaved you can just use the outline of the head to define it’s top.

In this case the hair will be slightly longer so it will be draw with just a little bit of volume. To do this draw the hair pretty much hugging the shape of the head starting from the top of the ears gradually moving away from it towards the top.
To finish the line drawing first erase the top part of the head that should be covered by the hair. Afterwards go over your drawing with a darker stroke.
Short anime hair will usually be drawn in smaller clumps compared to longer hair. The reason for this is that short hairs can’t reach far enough to join into as a big a clump.
