Upcoming Anime Conventions In Michigan

The Remus Anime Club invites community members around the mid Michigan area to come together to appreciate the diverse Japanese entertainment styles.

“Some popular genres include; Adventure, Shonen (long running action anime), Shojo (romance), horror, thriller, and slice of life, ” Karen Brookshear, the main host for the Remus Anime Club said. “There’s also many different art styles and studios that produce anime. Some are more cuter (chibi), some are more intense, some realistic, and some standard. Finding a genre and a style that you like is a great way to find an anime you’d enjoy.”

How

The Remus Anime Club meets two Wednesdays a month at Wheatland Township Hall (201 S. Sheridan Avenue). Brookshear started the club with her daughter to meet other folks in the area that have an interest in anime since other Michigan clubs are farther away.

“We usually host one casual meetup night with games, art, cosplay and Karaoke options all available and one meetup with a specific group activity like learning to draw anime or watching anime, ” Brookshear said. “We’re always open to suggestions from our members for what they might be interested in doing. Our meeting space is large enough for people to separate into groups and explore different interests. We provide art supplies, games, and food every Club night.”

“There is a wide variety of anime interests among the members, ” Brookshear said. “Some have been watching anime for years and some just getting started. Our club is open to the public and we welcome all levels of interest. We take pride in having a very inclusive and accepting group.”

The club has also gone to anime conventions in Grand Rapids and Alma, which they are planning to go to again in March.

“2020 has been a very difficult year for all of us, and we know that many of you were looking at Youmacon as being that outlet to help ease us through the end of the year, and for that, we cannot apologize enough, ” organizers wrote on the event’s Facebook page.

While there won’t be a physical event at the end of October, organizers say they will now be hosting an online event for free over the Halloween weekend. Details have not yet been announced.

“This year has put us through so much, and we wanted nothing else but to bring you an event bigger and better than the previous as we have always strived to do, and having to postpone the event in this manner has not been easy. Far from it. Regardless of how things went, your safety and well-being have always been our top priority.”

This isn’t the first major convention to postpone for 2020. Grand Rapids Comic Con organizers announced the event’s postponement earlier this month. It’s the second biggest comic con in Michigan. The state’s largest one, Motor City Comic Con, also postponed. Other big events like the North American International Auto Show and the Michigan Renaissance Festival followed suit and also hope to return in 2021.
