Anime North Dealers Room What To Expect

Anime North Dealers Room What To Expect

It’s hard to believe that this week marks about two years since the last time I officially travelled to a convention – I do not consider my short foray into Kimikon in 2019 as part of that, as I did not buy a ticket to that. The convention in question is Fan Expo in Toronto, which two months from now will host a limited capacity event at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. How a typically summer-oriented convention will be able to re-orient itself against the windy waves of the fall is beyond me, and although I won’t be attending due to the pricing shenanigans the last time I went there ($105 for weekend tickets, are you for real?), I do hope the event goes off safely and smoothly for those who wish to attend. Though, I sorta wonder how nice it would be to cosplay a Roman Catholic cardinal with the winter cappa magna (like Alfredo Cardinal Ottaviani, pictured here) across the market section.

Speaking of conventions, it’s no secret that Anime North is my favourite convention to visit, and since that fateful May of 2016, I’ve had my fair share of tales to tell; some of the more major ones include karaoke competitions to string through, cosplay battle chess intrigues and the Anime North Skit Contest escapdes which transpired just hours after the Toronto Raptors’ 5th-game victory in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals. However, included in that batch also are a couple of other minor occurences that I’ve experienced, which I shall now share in the following paragraphs below.

Convention

On the Monday of Holy Week in 2019, Paris’ famed Notre Dame Cathedral caught fire and its precious roof and spire burned down in an event that horrified millions worldwide. Coincidentally, that was also days before the inaugural International Fan Festival in Toronto, an event which I still shudder at on remembering the empty galleries, rainy weather and the lack of proper entertainment which led me to ditch it early – something which never crossed my mind at the time; but that’s besides the point. The character I was cosplaying: Judge Claude Frollo, the villain from Disney’s

, who had an infamous song sequence involving him and a certain fireplace. Of course, as a joke some cosplayers asked me rhetorically why I (my character) burned down the cathedral – which was to be expected.

Fast forward to a month later, at the Saturday of Anime North. In contrast to the consistently rainy weather that plagued my convention adventures a month ago, this one also

But it cleared up in the afternoon, a pertinent blessing from Our Lady of Fatima and St. Medard of Moyon. Once again, I was cosplaying Frollo for the second consecutive day, with the day prior involving me enduring 3 hours without food in preparation for a skit contest rendition of the

Sequence, and I had recently finished my cavalcades at the Cosplay Battle Chess event, which I begged to ditch early so I could see a

Photoshoot. While exploring the cavernous Delta Hotel adjacent to the Toronto Congress Centre scoping for cosplayers to get photos with, amidst the crowd I heard a certain quip clearly being made towards me.

It went, “Hey Frollo, don’t burn down any more churches please?” Upon hearing this I turned around and came across a woman wearing some kind of a lolita version of the “Little Bo Peep” character sitting at the side acting as a convention volunteer, clearly jesting at my sudden appearance. Needless to say, I was quite amused and joined in the fray the first time saying “The gypsies made me do it!” (quipping Frollo, not my personal ideology; I would never endorse racism towards another group). And that would be the end of it. Or so I thought. I made my way through the hotel another time, coming across plenty more folks cosplaying characters from

Series) mode on her and simply said a loud and hearty “Yes!” in his style. Of course, the same incident happened on the way out again.

The third time it occured was around the evening mark, which ended on a bit of a dreary note weather-wise. Around 5pm, the dark clouds that temporarily dispersed in the afternoon made their return, and produced a strong downpour which forced many to seek shelter, either underneath the canopy of the Toronto Congress Centre’s entrance, or if fortunate enough, inside the hotels. When I arrived inside the hotel, I came across a mass of folks piling into the dining hall area, along the side hallways, inside empty panel rooms, and some strewn across the bar, waiting for the sixth game of the Toronto Raptors’ bout against the Milwaukee Bucks to begin. I ran into a friend who I met at International Fan Festival, got a few more cosplay pics, and then decided it was time to go home – but not without running into the same volunteer from before, who made another “Don’t burn down any more churches” remark, and another playful banter of frustration from my end. Eventually, I met up with her, told her about how hilarious she had been, and that I had to get a picture with her just to remember this event.

She made one more reminder, this time serious, not to commit arson against any more big churches. In retrospect I should have replied: “I’m a Traditionalist Catholic loyal to Christ and His Church. What reason would I have to burn down the houses where my King and Redeemer lives?” Instead I was too caught up in the hysterics of the matter, and was in a bit of a rush to return home, not wanting to miss the Raptors game myself – so I promptly left, ran into my crush on the way back, and watched as the Raptors advanced to their first-ever NBA Finals appearance (and championship).

Another funny incident happened that Saturday in 2019, though a little backstory will be needed on this one. I once interned for about a year at a healthcare software company as a full stack developer, spending my days building the application interface, various system architecture designs, and attending laborious hour-long meetings to discuss the next items to build on the list conspicuously placed close to the start of lunch time. One of the persons that sat beside me, Paul, came across me one day watching an episode of

?” to which I responded, “Yep. You watch it too?” His reply was in the negative, but he did mention that his sister was also part of the cosplay community, and briefly pulled up her personal website detailing her cosplay photos.

Duel against a guy with an Elemental Hero deck using my burnout strategy. While recovering my mind and strength, a Homura Akemi cosplayer passed by the table. Since at that time she was my waifu, for anyone who cosplayed her, I would run up to them and yell “My waifu is real!”, followed by a photo. Naturally, I did the same with this person, and it went off without a hitch. A couple of months later, while browsing for some pictures of

Cosplayers at Anime North, I came across a picture of someone cosplaying Homura in 2019, which linked to a website that I found rather familiar. And then it hit me.

Remember Paul who I worked with from the previous paragraph? Well, it turns out that was the exact same website that he showed me two years ago, which belonged to his sister. It dawned on me that without realizing, I had snapped a photo with his sister that fateful day. Honestly it’s amazing how some things cam come full circle when you least expect them to.

Three years ago, I went with a some high school buddies to see for myself, for the very first time what all the hubbub was at Anime North. Clad in the relatively ghetto excuse of a Roman Catholic cardinal from the video game series

, I toured that place in glee despite the hot May weather. For lunch, it was decided that we would take a walk a few blocks east to a restaurant called St. Louis’ Bar And Grill, a diner that served Western dishes like hamburgers, steak, chicken wings, and pretty much anything that had a North American flavor to it. I had recently taken off the soaking garb that made my cardinal outfit, including the big red hat known as a
